Your sauna manual says no GFCI. The code says yes.

One of these documents is wrong about your backyard, and neither the manufacturer nor the code panel is going to tell you which. Here is the conflict, in the words of both sides.

What the code requires

GFCI protection on outdoor outlets fed by single-phase circuits of 150 volts to ground or less, rated 50 amps or below. A 240-volt sauna circuit splits into two 120-volt legs. Both qualify. The section says outlet, not receptacle — which reaches hardwired equipment.

What the manufacturer requires

Connect the heater to an ordinary two-pole breaker. Installing it on a GFCI breaker may cause nuisance tripping and premature wear on internal components, and in several manuals voids the warranty on those components outright.

Language of this kind appears in Harvia, Tylo and Saunum installation instructions, and was quoted verbatim by a Minnesota electrician working from a heater manual in the field.

What we found

There is no clean answer, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. The word sauna does not appear in the National Electrical Code. What happens in your backyard is decided by your local inspector's reading of a general rule that was not written with sauna heaters in mind.

What you can do is arrive at that conversation knowing exactly what the disagreement is.

What changed, and why it caught saunas

Section 210.8(F) was not aimed at saunas. It was aimed at the outside of houses generally, after a run of electrocutions involving children playing around exterior equipment. The same code cycle extended GFCI protection into laundry rooms for similar reasons. Saunas were swept in by the width of the language rather than by intent.

Two words do the work. The first is outlet. In code usage an outlet is any point where current is taken to supply equipment — not only a receptacle you can plug into. A hardwired heater at the end of a circuit is an outlet. The second is the voltage threshold. A 240-volt circuit reads as 120 volts on each leg measured to ground, which places it inside a rule most people assume applies only to ordinary outdoor sockets.

Why the breaker actually trips

The manufacturers are not inventing the problem. A traditional sauna heater sits idle in an unheated room for days, and its elements absorb moisture from the air. When the heater is first energised, that moisture gives a small current a path to ground. The leakage is harmless, and it stops once the elements dry.

The difficulty is scale. A Class A GFCI opens at a ground-fault current of four to six milliamps, because that is roughly where current across a human chest becomes dangerous. A damp element can exceed it easily. The device is not malfunctioning when it trips — it is doing exactly what it was designed to do, on a fault that happens not to be a person.

Which is why the failure pattern is so recognisable. A sauna runs for two years without incident, then starts tripping every session. Nothing broke. The weather changed.

The argument the code panel has not settled

The case for protecting the circuit is uncomfortable once you have pictured it. An electrician on a professional forum put it plainly: people pour water onto a 240-volt heater, usually with a metal ladle, standing in the runoff. Another made the comparison that follows from the code as written — a clothes dryer, used by a dressed and dry person, is required to have GFCI protection. A sauna, used by a wet person sitting a metre from an appliance of the same voltage and similar power, is not specifically required to have it, because the code leaves that to the manufacturer.

The case against is narrower but real. A GFCI that trips on every start-up is not protection. It is a device the owner will eventually bypass, and a bypassed GFCI protects nobody. Manufacturers who prohibit it are, in part, refusing to ship a product that trains its owner to defeat safety equipment.

Neither position is unreasonable. That is what makes this an unresolved conflict rather than a mistake.

What electricians are actually doing

These are the approaches documented by working electricians on professional forums between 2021 and mid-2026. None is a recommendation, and none removes the need for your inspector to sign off.

Choose a different heaterThe prohibition is not universal. Saunacore does not carry it. Where a jurisdiction enforces 210.8(F) on outdoor saunas, the cleanest path may be a heater whose manufacturer does not instruct against GFCI in the first place.

The last row is the one worth reading twice, because it is the only one that resolves the conflict instead of managing it — and it is a decision you can only make before you buy.

Before you act on any of this

This page describes a documented disagreement between a code section and a set of manufacturer instructions. It is not electrical advice, and it is not a basis for omitting protection your inspector requires.

Sauna wiring is a 240-volt circuit in a wet room. It is work for a licensed electrician, and in most jurisdictions a new 240-volt circuit requires a permit and inspection regardless of the GFCI question. If your electrician's reading differs from anything here, your electrician is the one standing in your yard.

What to ask, and when

The order matters more than the questions, because two of these stop being useful once money has changed hands.

  • Before choosing a heater. Ask the seller for the installation manual as a PDF, not a summary, and search it for GFCI. If it prohibits one and your area enforces 210.8(F) outdoors, you have found the problem while you can still solve it by choosing differently.
  • Before the quote. Ask your electrician how your inspector has treated outdoor saunas recently. Inspectors are consistent within a jurisdiction even when jurisdictions differ from each other.
  • Before the wire is pulled. Ask the building department whether they read an outdoor sauna as an accessory building under 210.8(F). One phone call resolves the entire question for your address.
  • Before you sign. Ask what happens to the warranty either way — with a GFCI installed against the manual, and on a claim against a heater that was wired to code.

The part nobody can answer for you

Somewhere between the code panel and the manufacturers' engineers this will be resolved. A future code cycle may write an exception for sauna heaters, or manufacturers may redesign elements that tolerate a Class A device. Until one of those happens, every outdoor sauna in the United States is installed on somebody's judgement call.

The useful thing is knowing that is what is happening, rather than discovering it when the breaker starts popping in the third winter.
